Figure 7
(a) Primary (IBr) and secondary (IIBr) brachitaxes of a single ray. The first brachitaxis has two brachials (IBr1 and IBr2), while the second has four (IIBr1, IIBr2, IIBr3, and IIBr4). Note that there are syzygies (+) between IIBr3 and IIBr4 and between the third and fourth brachials of the non-branching arm. (b) Primary and secondary brachitaxes of a different ray. In this case, there are only two brachials in the second brachitaxis. These are not connected by syzygy, but syzygies are still present between the third and fourth brachials of the non-branching arm. (c) Syzygies regularly distributed at the distal portion of a non-branching arm. Note that that the syzygies occur on every fourth brachial, thus the intersyzygial interval is four.
