Summary

Alloecomatella pectinifera is a bright red to dark red-brown, ten-armed, unstalked feather star, or crinoid, in the family Comasteridae (see Fig. 1). A. pectinifera can be distinguished from other species in the genus by its anterior arms, which are usually twice as long as its posterior arms (Messing 1995).

It's range extends throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, and it is one of the more common species of feather stars encountered on the outer reef flats and coral rubble crest of Heron Reef. It's habits are cryptic, and during the day it hides underneath boulders or in crevices in coral or rubble, emerging only at night to feed. Key anatomical and physiological features of A. pectinifera include:

Crinoids are also hosts to a many commensal ectosymbionts (animals that live on the body of another animal), and here we provide original data on the number and type of ectosymbionts found on A. pectinifera from a study of six specimens collected at Heron Reef in 2012 (see Commensalisms).
