There are several competing theories for the position of clades (groups consisting of a common ancestor and all its descendents) within Crinoidea, see Fig. 7. Molecular phylogenetic analysis conducted by Cohen et al. supports the relationships shown in Fig. 7A and is discussed in detail in Cohen et al. (2004). An initial molecular investigation of the relationship within the feather star family Comasteridae by White et al. (2000) mostly supports the morphological grouping, with the exception of a few genera, which do not appear to be monophyletic in view of molecular data (Fig. 8). The molecular data confirm the position of A. pectinifera within Alloeocomatella White et al. (2000).
