Scleractinian corals are defined by their paired septa, lack of obvious siphonoglyphs and sheet like retractor muscles (Ruppert et al, 2004).




The skeleton is composed of calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite, this is secreted by the epidermis of the pedal disk in the solitary fungids (Ruppert et al, 2004). This produces a skeletal cup known as the corallite, this is what the coral tissue lives in and is used for protection (Ruppert et al, 2004).  The underside of the coral has radiating sclerosepta, these do not extend to the dorsal surface in fungiids and hence they do not have costae on the dorsal side (Ruppert et al, 2004).    

  

Within the gut of solitary corals, there are which extend from the septum and are used for defense, prey capture and digestion (Ruppert et al, 2009)
