Summary

Limaria fragilis, or more commonly known as the fragile file clam, belongs to the group Limidae within the phylum Mollusca.  L. fragilis inhabits reef flats in the Indo-pacific region.  This beautifully patterned and colourful species hides under coral boulders and crevices, protecting itself from potential predators and harsh environmental conditions.  Once the boulder is turned over, the fragile file clam can be easily located due to its bright red-pink tentacles protruding from its distinctly patterned mantle, and its ability to swim through the water column.  Investigating the ecology, life history, behaviour, morphology and evolution of Limaria fragilis, provides insightful information on this distinct organism within the Great Barrier region.

By analysing various life history traits, including feeding ability, further understanding of this organism was achieved. By presenting the fragile file clam with three different sizes of algal, the study was able to determine if Limaria fragilis has a preferred feeding size. This study determined there was a preference in size, consuming significantly more 4-7µm and 7-20µm sized algae, then 1-2µm. Through examining primary literature, this study evaluated potential reasoning behind why Limaria fragilis shows some degree of feeding preference.

Through experimentation, data analysis, observational studies and histological methods, this website was created, providing you with information on L. fragilis' morphology and anatomy, distribution, micro-habitat associations, feeding, locomotion, reproduction, defence mechanisms as well as phylogeny, and potential threats.
