Holothuria atra is one of the most common species of sea cucumber found in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific region (Harriot 1982). It has been found in high abundance in northern Australia (Harriot 1980) (Uthicke 1997) (Thorne et al. 2012), New Caledonia (Purcell et al. 2009), Sri Lanka (Dissanayake & Stefansson 2012), and Taiwan (Chao et al. 1993).
