Size

Rhabdastrella globostellata specimens can reach up to 45cm in diameter, with up to several concave depressions on the apical surface. These can be up to 0.5cm-5cm deep and house numerous small oscules (up to 40; 1-4mm in diameter), with the larger oscules more central in the clusters (Carter, 1883; Kennedy, 2000).

Images: two specimens of Rhabdastrella globostellata found on Heron Island, GBR. Note even within the same location there is a range of oscule sizes between sponges of similar size.

Spicule size varies between location. Kennedy (2000) reviewed samples from various locations to determine correct classification of misidentified specimens. Below are his findings, as listed in the Memoirs of the Queensland Museum:

Table: Comparison between holotype and other material of Rhabdastrella globostellata by region. Measurements in µm, denoted as range (and mean). L = length; W = width; RL rhabd length; CL = clad length. (Kennedy, 2000)
