Glossary of the some of the non-standard terms, denoted in-text by an asterisk (*).

  • Bryozoa (= Ectoprocta): phylum of small sedentary, colonial invertebrates which produce a coral-like structure (ex: Lace Coral).
  • Epizoic: said of an animal growing nonparasitically on the exterior of a living animal.
  • Epizoon (see epizoic): an epizoic animal.
  • Hyposmotic: said of a environment (here external) with a lower osmotic pressure than that of the internal environment of the organism.
  • Pseudocoelomate: have some tissue organisation, but lack a ‘true’ coelom.
  • Viscera: internal organs in the main cavities in the body.
  • Zooecium (‘animal house’): the organic or mineral exoskeleton secreted by bryozoans.
  • Zooid: individual organism of a colony (ex: Bryozoa), often with different forms and functions.
