Biogeographic distribution

Approximate World Distribution of  Pegea confoederata. Darker blue represents distribution.

Like many other salp species, Pegea confoederata is a cosmopolitan species that is widely distributed across all oceans. The southern limit for Pegea confoederata is generally considered to be at the Subtropical Convergence (Casareto and Nemoto 1986). This is consistent with research that shows that the lowest temperature that Pegea confoederata has ever been found in is 8°C (Soest 1975). Other, cold-water species of salp don't generally cross the Subtropical Convergence either, using this same line as their northern limit.

Despite the fact that Pegea confoederata has a large distribution, this distribution is extremely patchy, with large distances between dense populations due to food availability (Madin et al. 1996).
