Summary

This webpage will detail characteristics of Trididemnum sp. including its anatomy, life history, taxonomy, behaviour and distribution. Following an experiment started at Heron Island Research Station and completed at the University of Queensland (St Lucia Campus), its symbiotic relationship with Prochloron will be described.

Ascidians are sessile marine animals that occur throughout the world’s oceans (Hirose et al, 2006). Ascidian species have highly diverse life histories, reproductive strategies and internal orgnaisation. Some species are colonial while others are solitary. There are few reliable morphological characteristics of zooids due to their small size and uniformity (Memoirs of the Australian Museum, 2001). Consequently, the ascidian described on this webpage, was only identified down to genus level. The species belongs to the Didemnidae family, genus Trididemnum. It is a colonial, compound species.

The green colouration of the colony is due to the presence of the photosynthetic bacterium Prochloron. Prochloron lives in obligate symbiosis with Didemnid ascidians (Munchoff et al, 2007).
