Physical Description

Colonial ascidians can range from half a centimetre to many meters in length. The presence of a protective tunic covering the epidermis is a distinguishing feature of the subphylum Tunicata (Urochordata) to which Trididemnum sp. belongs.

The colonies of the Trididemnum sp. collected on Heron Island were quite small, ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 cm. They had a clear, thick tough tunic which expanded at the edges of the colony, possibly to aid in attachment to the substratum (Figure one). Each colony is made up of many small individual zooids completely embedded, apart from their openings, in the tunic. This is the most specialised type of colony and is referred to as a compound colony. As already noted, the dark green colour of the colony is created by the presence of the bacterium prochloron.
