This species is identified from other related species such as Salmacina dysteri (family Serpulidae) by a number of morphological and mineralogical components.  Specifically it is distinguished by collar setal morphology, thorax segmentation count and its distinctive yellow cup shaped operculum (Richards, 2008; Van Nieuwenhuijzen, 2011).  F. implexa in particular has a calcite dominated tube chemical framework with minor component of aragonite (Vinni et al., 2008)
