Local Distribution and Habitats

They are primarily found in the eulittoral and deeper rocky areas (WoRMS 2010). In the case of Heron Island, they are found on the under-side of the coral boulders in the reef crest. They are mostly never found on top of boulders or in any condition with direct sunlight exposure, suggesting that they are a nocturnal species, yet research has not been done on this species to confirm this. During low tide, they have also been spotted inside (in between) the coral rubble in the reef crest, underneath the coral boulders. They do not form large aggregations and seem to be solitary in most cases, although there have been a few occasions where they were found in pairs or groups of three.
