Conservation and Importance

Due to the high abundance of these organisms on most reefs where they are found, there is no conservation efforts necessary. They are considered to not be threatened.

Many different species of Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus spp.) are constantly spotted on reefs around the world during reef walks, snorkels and dives. Their vibrant colouration and unique body form makes this worm popular in macro-photographic shots.

There has also been attempts to grow Christmas tree worms in aquariums with some success from advanced hobbyists. To successfully grow them in captivity, their environment must maintain specific temperatures and water quality (pH and oxygen concentration) (Gripp, 2008). This highlights the Xmas worms sensitivity to and dependence on their environment.
