Colonies of botryllus are made up of a variable number of zooids, each roughly 1-2mm in length (Carver et al. 2006). Rinkevich et al. (1998) found that sexually mature colonies contained an average of 171-273 zooids, while juvenile colonies contained an average of 37-90 zooids. Zooids share a common apical aperture which is thought to optimize the space utilized by the colony (Carver et al. 2006). |
